The idea for this ride actually arose while hiking on the Appalachian Trail in 2021. My wife is section hiking the whole thing and I join occasionally for a week or so (I am not a long distance hiker - much prefer riding!). One night at a shelter we got to talking with “Potato Chip” (her trail name); she was maybe mid 60’s and when we asked why she was hiking this entire trail she said she was raising money for ALS. Her husband had died of the disease a few years prior. Wow - that was pretty cool.
Later at home I started thinking about riding the Ohio to Erie trail across Ohio - and then thought, what the heck, could it be an ALS fundraiser and go all the way from Oxford, OH (Where Doug and I went to college at Miami) to Boxford, MA, where Doug grew up, and still lives nearby? So, before that idea went into the trash bucket in my head, I called Doug and Dolly up to run it by them - because I was pretty sure I couldn’t do it alone! They were psyched, and here we are, getting ready for the ride in June! And we definitely can’t do this thing alone - and this thing is both the bike ride and the effort to find a cure for ALS. The support and encouragement so far has been amazing! It’s gonna be fun!
